One ster of dry, oven-ready beech (33 cm) costs 180 to 220 francs in 2026 according to the Swiss Farmers' Union's guide prices, from the wood shed and without delivery. Delivery and stacking usually come on top. With us, a ster of beech costs CHF 329.00, delivered and stacked.

Firewood prices in Switzerland depend on more than meets the eye: wood species, dryness, log length, delivery and the question of who stacks the wood in the end. Firewood prices in Switzerland: what does a ster cost? The 2026 guide prices

The Swiss Farmers' Union publishes guide prices for the direct sale of firewood from the farm. They are not binding, but they are a good reference. The current list is valid from September 28, 2026:

Wood species (split, 33 cm, dry)Francs per ster
Softwood160 to 170
Mixed hardwood170 to 190
Beech180 to 220
Birch200 to 220

Source: Swiss Farmers' Union, guide prices for direct marketing of firewood (in German), valid from September 28, 2026, retrieved on October 11, 2026. Small quantities, oven-ready, dry, without delivery, from the wood shed.

Green wood costs much less: for 1 m long split logs from the forest road, the union suggests 75 to 95 francs per ster of beech (birch 110 to 130). In return, the wood is not oven-ready. It still has to be stored for about two years before use, and you usually arrange the transport from the forest road yourself.

What is in the price: wood species, dryness, delivery, stacking

  • Wood species: hardwoods such as beech give more heat per ster than softwood (EnergieSchweiz) and therefore cost more.
  • Dryness: oven-ready wood has under 20% moisture (Holzenergie Schweiz). Drying costs storage space and time, which is why dry wood is more expensive than green wood. We deliver our wood at under 18% moisture.
  • Processing: sawing, splitting and drying are work that is part of the price.
  • Delivery: the guide prices apply without delivery, and many suppliers charge for it separately. With us it is free.
  • Stacking: you stack tipped wood yourself, which takes time and effort. With us it is included, up to 50 m from the drop-off point.

How to compare offers: the total price counts

A low wood price says little as long as it is unclear what comes on top. So calculate the price at which the wood is stacked at your stove:

How you can measure the amount and why a «ster» is not the same as a «loose cubic meter» is explained in What is a ster of firewood.

Per kilowatt hour: beech is not more expensive

Beech costs more than softwood, but it also gives more energy per ster. A worked example with the midpoints of the guide prices and the energy values at 20% water content:

Wood speciesPrice per ster (midpoint of the range)Energy per sterPrice per kWh
Beech200 francs1,887 kWhabout 10.6 cents
Spruce165 francs1,334 kWhabout 12.4 cents

Sources: guide prices of the Swiss Farmers' Union (softwood 160 to 170, beech 180 to 220 francs per ster); energy values from Holzenergie Schweiz on behalf of BAFU, table A9. Rounded; the example does not apply to every offer.

Per kilowatt hour, beech is about 14% cheaper than spruce in this example. Hardwood holds more energy per volume: for the same heat you need fewer ster.

Frequently asked questions about firewood prices

What are the current wood prices in Switzerland?

Since September 28, 2026, the Swiss Farmers' Union recommends, for dry, oven-ready split firewood (33 cm, without delivery), 160 to 170 francs per ster of softwood, 170 to 190 francs for mixed hardwood, 180 to 220 francs for beech and 200 to 220 francs for birch.

What does a kilo of firewood cost?

In Switzerland firewood is usually sold by the ster, not by the kilo. A ster of beech weighs about 450 kg. At 180 to 220 francs per ster, that works out at roughly 40 to 49 cents per kilo.

What does it cost to split 1 ster of wood?

That depends on the operation. With oven-ready wood, splitting is included in the price: the guide prices of the Swiss Farmers' Union apply to split, dry logs of 33 cm. With us you get the wood split, dry and stacked, with no extra charge for splitting.

How many ster does a single-family house need?

That depends on the building and the heating. Calculate from your previous consumption: 1,000 liters of heating oil equal 5 to 6 ster of hardwood (EnergieSchweiz). More in What is a ster of firewood.

Is beech firewood expensive?

Beech costs more per ster than softwood but also gives more energy: in the worked example above it is even cheaper per kilowatt hour. For firewood we carry beech and birch.
